RSS Resources

HOW TO...

Adventures in RSS is a collection of "learning adventures" developed specifically for the NAIS Classrooms of the Future demonstration classroom at the 2008 Annual Conference in New York City

RSS Feed Learning Object: This learning object was created to instruct about RSS feeds and how to create one in the WebCT 4.X environment. You can follow these same instructions for CE 6 and Vista 4 but place the copied code in the header of any folder.

JAVA SCRIPT WRITERS: These programs will write about 10 lines of code that you can copy and paste into any html page or text box in WebCT. You can find additional JAVA writers in search engines using the search term "feed2js".

AGGRETATORS: These are programs and web resources you can use to subscribe to a feed.

OTHER RESOURCES

  • Feedster: This is a search engine for RSS feeds
  • Sample Feeds: These feeds were constructed using a simple html editor and an automatic JAVA script writer- Feed2JS.

Other Internet Tools

Social Book Marking

Del.icio.us: Free social bookmarking tool that anyone can use. Tag your bookmarks, search other tags and users bookmarks. A fantastic tool.

Scholar.com: This is the free Blackboard social bookmarking tool. You can find other links for this presentation simply by visiting www.scholar.com and searching by the tags bbworld07 and bigenho or blackburn.

Social Bookmarking with Del.icio.us: This is a page in WikiEducator that talks you through the basics of how to use del.icio.us. This is a great place to start.

Social Note Taking: This is a new class of social software that has not reached mainstream yet. However, there is tremendous potential here.

Google Notebook: This is a free social notebook from Google.

Collaborative Tools:

Data Visualization:

Universe: This tool looks at news stories posted on the web. It makes use of tags and linked stories to create a "universe" around your search terms. This allows you to easily search for stories and see how they are related.

We Feel Fine: This tool searches the web for blog entries that have the word(s) "I feel" and grabs everything included in the sentence. This is then visualized in several forms and can be analyzed by gender, geographic location, date and time, and feeling. This is an interesting way to look at digital stories left on the web.

GapMinder: Visualize global statistical data. This is a new way of viewing complex social and economic data about the world. This is well worth a look.

Digital Storytelling

VoiceThreads: This tool allows you to easily post pictures and record audio that is linked to the picture. This tool also allows for text and audio comments. This is a wonderful tool for digital storytelling.

Tumblr: This tool makes it easy to place almost any form of information on the web- pictures, audio, movies, text. It can all be placed on the web through forms common in most web 2.0 tools. This tool could easily be used for digital storytelling.
